Wild Nephin

North-West Mayo is renowned as being the most remote area in Ireland. The Wild Nephin Project is a 15 year programme that is looking to officially establish 11,000 hectares of blanket bog in the Nephin Beg Mountain Range as Ireland's first designated 'wilderness area'. Coillte will eventually concede over 4,400 hectares of commercial forestry to help rewild the area in a more sympathetic fashion to the natural landscape.

This map centres on the area dedicated to the Wild Nephin Wilderness Area. Where the Ordnance Survey Discovery takes four maps (Sheets 22, 23, 30 and 31) to cover this area, this map covers the 650 sq km of land on one sheet at a scale of 1:25,000. The map is printed on 100 gsm Enduro paper, which is water and tear resistant. There is a 3km overlap between the two maps printed on both sides of the sheet.

Barry Dalby, of EastWest Mapping, has conducted a lot of research in capturing the many historical placenames used by locals that do not always appear on the equivalent Ordnance Survey maps.
